U1 is a candle holder prototype created in the course D0037A – Theory and Practice.
The assignment was to design a candle holder based on the principles of functionalism—clarity, purpose-driven form, and honest material expression. The candle holder is thought to be crafted from bentwood to achieve a clean and minimal silhouette

A veneer prototype was also developed early in the process to explore the geometry and refine the overall form. Focuses on materiality and the functionalist idea that form follows function.
After the course, I continued to explore the form and overall design, further refining the concept through 3D modeling to develop a more mature and cohesive expression. The updated version retains the original bentwood structure, but the previous “feet” have been replaced with integrated weights in the base for improved stability.
The candle-holding component is envisioned in ceramics, available in different shapes, colors and sizes (type of candle), and designed to be easily interchangeable.
